Jocelyn Willoughby, a guard/forward for the New York Liberty, has been selected as the recipient of the WNBA Cares Community Assist Award presented by State Farm for the month of August.

This honor was bestowed upon Willoughby in recognition of her dedication to combating racial and economic injustices and providing resources to assist vulnerable individuals in the state of New York and society in general.

Education, addressing food insecurity, and ensuring that all groups have access to equal housing opportunities are among Willoughby’s top priorities in the neighborhood. Willoughby, along with her teammates and the staff at Liberty, hosted two sessions with participants from the Vera Institute. The mission of the Vera Institute is to eliminate all instances of incarceration of girls and gender-expansive youth in the country’s juvenile justice system by the year 2030. Participants observed a practice, took part in exercises in small groups, and had a conversation with members of the team.

Willoughby made a visit at Breakaway Hoops camp as part of her dedication to giving back to youngsters. There, she engaged in conversation with the children who were present at the camp. Families all across New York City can sign up for Breakaway Hoops’ elite basketball clinics, leagues, camps, and remote training opportunities. In addition, she joined the rest of her team and the workers at Liberty in preparing and serving dinner at the Bowery Mission to over 115 members of the homeless community in New York City.

During the course of the season, the WNBA Cares Community Assist Award, which is sponsored by State Farm®, is given out on a monthly basis to the player who most exemplifies the WNBA’s desire to make a positive impact on the world around them.
