San Beda University ended Colegio de San Juan de Letran’s nine-game winning streak with a 91-77 victory over its rival on Wednesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
The victory was part of San Beda University’s elimination sweep of Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the NCAA Season 98 Seniors Basketball Tournament.
Jacob Cortez sank a massive triple as time ran out on the shot clock, just as the Knights were attempting to crawl back into the ball game. This compelled Letran to request a timeout with 6:51 left to play, with the score 77-61.
With three minutes and 32 seconds remaining, Gab Cometa hit a three-pointer of his own, extending the Red Lions’ lead to 20 points with a score of 87-67.
“More than breaking the run and beating Letran, it offers us a greater opportunity in the playoffs, positioning-wise,” he said. “It gives us a better chance in the playoffs.” Yun lan naman sinabi ko sa kanila – one game at a time. “But of course, competing against Letran brings out the best in the players,” stated Yuri Escueta, the head coach of the Red Lions.
Prior to that, Damie Cuntapay started the game off strong for San Beda by scoring the first 11 points for the club.
After a three by Cuntapay in the third quarter, the Red Lions established their largest advantage of the game, which was 59-37.
Neil Guarino and Kurt Reyson of Letran each hit a triple to answer the challenge that was presented to them. However, only a few seconds before the conclusion of the third canto, a technical foul was called on Kurt Reyson and the Letran bench. The offense was persistent in its criticism of the referee for the foul that was called on the former when Tony Ynot accidentally bumped him during the play with the loose ball.
Both Reyson and Brent Paraiso were ejected from the game; Reyson for receiving his second technical foul at the beginning of the overtime period, which led to his removal, and Brent Paraiso for receiving his fifth foul just before hitting the halfway mark of the fourth quarter.
James Kwekuteye was the leading scorer for San Beda with 19 points. He shot 5-of-16 from the field and added seven rebounds and two assists to his stat line. Cuntapay and Yukien Andrada each contributed 16 points, and JB Bahio recorded a double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists. Yukien Andrada and Cuntapay each contributed 16 points.
