San Sebastian College-Recoletos defeated University of Perpetual Help System DALTA by a score of 78-74 on Friday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City, Philippines.

The game was the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA’s final contest in the NCAA Season 98 Seniors Basketball Tournament. The victory by San Sebastian College-Recoletos gave them a loss. Reymart Escobido’s crucial defensive stop was a key factor in

The Altas were trailing by two points, 74-76, and the shot clock had already been turned off when Jeff Egan drove to the basket in an attempt to tie the game for his team. However, Escobido snatched the ball from him.

After preventing Escobido from scoring on a breakaway with 2.4 seconds left on the clock, Shawn Orgo was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by the referee. After the latter made both of their free throws, Perpetual was eliminated from the competition with a loss.

“Parehas wants to win, but the problem [for the Altas] is breaks of the quarter and execution,” stated the head coach of the Stags, Egay Macaraya. “Those breaks of the quarter and execution come back to us.”

Orgo was able to sink a massive three-pointer with 1 minute and 41 seconds remaining in the payoff period, which brought the score to 71-74 and made it a three-point game. However, Ichie Altamirano promptly answered with a mid-range jumper, which brought the advantage back up to five points, 76-71.

Orgo’s two free throws and a split free shot from Rey Barcuma brought the score to 74-76, cutting the team’s deficit to just two points and giving them a chance to win the game.

After hitting Escobido in the face with an elbow, Jielo Razon was issued a disqualifying foul, which prevented him from rejoining the game until almost halfway through the fourth quarter.

“That was the most important point. Nakashoot kami, tinawagan sila ng unspo, we perform good defense and nag turnover pa sila. I believe breaks of the game lang na binigay ng Panginoon samin,” Macaraya added.

Egan and Carlo Ferreras are leading the Altas in scoring with 15 and 12 points respectively. Both players also have four rebounds and three assists each.

The Stags finished the season with a record of 7-9, while the Altas finished with a record of 7-11 in wins and losses.

On Sunday at 12 NN, San Sebastian will play their next game, which is against Emilio Aguinaldo College.
